How to Treat Your Gum Recession

Posted .

Do you suffer from gum recession? If so, then the gums have pulled away from the base of your teeth and have exposed the tooth roots, making the teeth look longer and even causing tooth sensitivity. There are many things that could be causing your recession, like gingivitis, the misuse of whitening treatments, improperly brushing and flossing and more. The good news is that there are many treatments available that can help your recession, and our periodontist, Dr. Barton Barré, is happy to tell you all about them. Those treatments are:

-Improving oral hygiene habits: If rough brushing and flossing techniques are the cause of your gum recession, then it’s important to change your ways. Make sure you’re using the right tools to clean the smile (a soft-bristled toothbrush, non-whitening toothpaste and easy-to-use floss) and then make sure to use a gentle technique when brushing and flossing. If it’s tough to be gentle as you brush, you can try using an electric toothbrush.

-Gum disease treatment: If gum disease is the cause of your recession, then a deep cleaning or scaling and root planing treatment could be beneficial. These treatments thoroughly clean the smile and promote healing in the gums.

-Gum grafts: If genetics cause severe gum recession or if you are a victim of the later stages of gum disease, then a gum graft might be the right treatment for you. This treatment involves using excess gum tissue to replace the receded gums and cover and protect the tooth roots and underlying bone.
